New laptop thoughts

I now have a new laptop. The laptop is a HP ProBook 4540s w/ a 2.5 GHz 3rd generation I5 processor, 8 GBs of RAM, Dedicated Radeon Video card w/ 1GB RAM, 750 GB HD and came with both Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Pro (Windows 7 Pro pre-installed) I chose to install Windows 8 since I use it at work and have to support it. I really don’t mind Windows 8. It just takes time to get used to it.

The only really bad thing in the process of getting a new computer is the transfer of data from the old machine to the new one. Yes, I know there is a nice program called, Windows Easy Transfer Wizard that makes the process less painful, but you still have to install the software on the new machine that you have on the old one. You also have to decide if you are truly using the programs on the old machine or not. There is also the pain of getting rid of the “bloatware” that often comes with the computer. I was spared this last item since I had to install the Windows 8 OS and then had the options of what “extra” software to install. Very nice, HP.

I have spent the last 3 days setting up the machine and tweaking things. I’ve got most of the main work done. Now to start using it on a daily bases. I should finalize the setup in another week or so. Then I get the task of making one last back up of the old laptop and then rebuilding it from scratch. The old machine is a Dell Latitude E5400. It was okay, but not really what I wanted in a machine. It should be fine for my 14 year old son. It has Windows 7 Ultimate on it since I got a license for it 5 years ago when it first came out.

I will share more posts about my process and thoughts of my new machine in the following days. I’ll even give my reviews on Microsoft Office 2013. There are some nice features and some really dumb things that they put into the programs.
